Tom is a New Zealand trained Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in disorders of the Hand, Wrist and Elbow.

Following completion of his Orthopaedic training in 2016 he undertook 2 years of overseas post-graduate Fellowship in Hand and Upper Limb Surgery. For 12 months he worked at Toronto Western Hospital, a major referral centre in Canada for complex disorders of the Hand and Upper Limb and where the first hand transplant in Canada was successfully undertaken. He then spent a further 12 months working with Professor Mark Ross and colleagues at the Brisbane Hand and Upper Limb Research Institute and Princess Alexandra Hospital, the Tertiary referral centre for complex Hand, Upper Limb and Microsurgery disorders for Brisbane and Queensland, Australia.

Tom also holds a public position as a Hand, Wrist and Elbow Surgeon at Middlemore Hospital where he is involved in the teaching of Medical Students and Surgical Trainees.
